From SHRM's Advocacy "A" Team: I know your personal safety and the safety of workplaces you serve is top of mind as we continue to deal with the challenges surrounding COVID-19. During this time SHRM is working to provide you with the latest tools, resources and information to manage COVID-19 in your workplaces.

Congress is moving at an unprecedented pace to combat COVID-19 and is considering policies that will directly impact you and your colleagues. The response to COVID-19 is an important reminder of why HR's voice needs to be heard by policymakers on all matters affecting work, workers and workplaces.

Yesterday, in an effort to address the situation, Congress passed HR 6201, the Emergency Families First Response to Coronavirus Act and the president immediately signed the bill into law. The sweeping legislation includes important changes to paid leave policy for many organizations throughout the country. These provisions include:

    • Emergency Sick Leave- under the bill, certain employers would be required to provide 80 hours (or 2 weeks) of fully paid leave to full-time employees.
    • Emergency Family and Medical Leave Expansion Act -Employers would be generally required to provide ten weeks of paid leave and pay employees two-thirds of their wages, not to exceed $200 per day and $10,000 in the aggregate.
    • Tax Credits for Paid Sick and Paid Family and Medical Leave- the bill would provide a 100% refundable tax credit to private sector employers (with less than 500 employees) on the wages paid for leave due to COVID-19.

You can find SHRM's in depth analysis of the Emergency Families First Response to Coronavirus Act here

As the Congressional response to the coronavirus continues, SHRM will continue to work with policymakers and update you on the changes that will have an impact on your workplace. Keep us informed about whether these efforts are helpful and what additional information would be relevant to your work.

    Thank you,

    Emily M. Dickens

SHRM Corporate Secretary, Chief of Staff &
    Head, Government Affairs
