Description:

This session will feature a panel of three seasoned HR lawyers with a moderator who will review current legal issues facing HR professionals. The panel will survey important workplace developments from 2023 and discuss statutory or other employment law initiatives that are expected to impact employers in 2024. The session is intended to be interactive and permit questions and answers from GSHRM members attending the meeting.

Panelist Bios:


Mark Bakker
(Moderator)

Mark W. Bakker is a member of Maynard Nexsen and has practiced employment law in Greenville, South Carolina for over 25 years. A member of the South and North Carolina Bars, Mark represents employers and management in all aspects of federal and state employment law. He litigates as well as providing proactive employment advice and counseling for all parts of the employment relationship to human resource personnel and business executives. Mark has been active with GSHRM, has presented at numerous HR seminars, written hundreds of articles on employment law, received many recognitions for his legal work, and is regularly listed among the best employment lawyers in South Carolina, including in the prestigious Chambers USA legal rankings. Prior to practicing in Greenville, Mark served as the law clerk for federal judges on United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and the United States District Court of South Carolina. He is a proud graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Law and Furman University.



Ashley Cuttino

Experienced litigation partner in all areas of employment law: wrongful termination, retaliation, discrimination, harassment, wage and hour issues, FMLA, disability discrimination and accommodation and employee privacy.


Chuck McDonald

Chuck McDonald is a shareholder in the Greenville office and practices primarily in the area of employment litigation and advice and counseling. He was certified as a specialist in employment and labor law by the Supreme Court of South Carolina in 2006. Chuck represents a variety of employers in employment litigation matters ranging from breach of employment contracts to cases involving discrimination in areas of race, sex, age, and disability in both individual and class actions. He also counsels employers regarding wage and hour matters such as employee compensation, exempt/nonexempt status, overtime compensation, minimum wage payments, and off-the-clock work issues.

He represents employers in individual and collective actions alleging violations of the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) and applicable state wage payment statutes. Chuck also represents employers in noncompete matters, trade secrets, and counsels employers in reduction-in-force situations to ensure compliance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN). 


Ashley Parr

Ashley Parr focuses her practice on Employment and Labor Law by representing employers in litigation, as well as providing daily proactive advice and counseling on employee and business-related matters. She also supports clients with a wide range of business disputes and legal compliance issues, as well as complex litigation matters in health care, education, and manufacturing, among other arenas. Ashley is dedicated to understanding her clients' needs and has established a great rapport of trust, accountability,
and attention to detail.

         

HR Certification Credit: GSHRM is recognized by SHRM to offer Professional Development Credits (PDCs) for SHRM-CP® or SHRM-SCP® recertification activities. This program is pending for 1 hour of SHRM re-certification credit and 1 hour of HRCI General re-certification credit. Certificates will be emailed to those in attendance after the meeting along with a Feedback Survey.

Poinsett Club Dress Code: Business casual. For gentlemen, a necktie is not required. Ladies shall dress appropriately. No jeans, shorts, or tennis shoes will be allowed. Cell phone use is not allowed in the Club.
