Description: Within higher education, internships are considered a part of the academic learning process. Undergraduate students engage in internship experiences to gain knowledge and skills by applying classroom experiences and pursuing their interests. At institutions of higher education, students are encouraged by faculty and staff to search for opportunities that allow them to assist organizations through meaningful, professional internship experiences. This session will focus on how organizations can develop meaningful internship programs and experiences that are value-added for both students and employers by focusing on high impact practice guidelines. The session will also cover logistical considerations for recruiting potential interns and how to best leverage university relationships to effectively promote internship opportunities.
-Understand High Impact Practice Guidelines: Participants will be able to identify and describe high impact practices that enhance the quality of internship experiences for undergraduate students and employers.
-Design Meaningful Internship Programs: Participants will learn what to consider when developing structured internship programs to provide value-added experiences for students while meeting organizational needs.
-Implement Effective Recruitment Strategies: Participants will explore logistical considerations and effective strategies for recruiting potential undergraduate interns.
-Leverage University Relationships: Participants will gain insights into how to effectively collaborate with higher education institutions to promote internship opportunities and attract qualified candidates.
Speaker Bio:
Katie Maxwell currently serves as the Internship Program Director in the Center for Engaged Learning at Furman University. Before transitioning to Furman in June 2022, she worked at Clemson University for nine years where she served as the Director of Advising and Student Development in the Honors College. Prior to her career in higher education, Katie worked in human resources and recruiting with Target Corporation. She holds three degrees from Clemson University including a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, M.Ed. in Counselor Education-Student Affairs, and a B.S. in Management.
